Dawn Staley’s basketball journey began at Murrell Dobbins Vocational High School in Philadelphia. During her final season, she was named the national high school player of the year.
Staley attended the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville, Virginia. At UVA, she earned a degree in Rhetoric and Communication Studies.
During her four seasons with the Cavaliers, she led her team to four NCAA tournaments, three Final Fours, and one national championship game.
She was honored as the ACC Female Athlete of the Year and the national player of the year in both 1991 and 1992. By the end of her college career, Staley had scored 2,135 points and set the NCAA record for career steals with 454.
Although her scoring and assist records were later broken, her number 24 jersey was retired by UVA in recognition of her outstanding contributions. After graduating, Staley played professional basketball overseas from 1994 to 1995.

At that time, Staley was busy with her commitments to the Olympic team and the WNBA. O’Brien, knowing her background as a Philadelphia native and a star basketball player, persuaded her to visit Temple.
Initially resistant, she was eventually convinced to take the position after O’Brien challenged her to find ways to improve the program.
In her first season (2000-2001), Staley led Temple to the WNIT. In the following years (2001, 2002, and 2004), her teams won the Atlantic 10 tournament, earning spots in the NCAA tournament.
